Fast Tom at Open Mic Night!

Fast Tom will be doing open mic night at the underground tonight (March 30th) around 8. It should be fun, we’ll probably be doing the same set of songs from last week. Come support us! Also, we have a Facebook group now, so feel free to join that as well if you like our music :).

Fast Tom Performs Their First Gig!

So last Tuesday was Fast Tom’s first official gig (not counting private dorm room performances). We were originally going to perform in the Underground for open mic night, but it turned out there wasn’t one, so we had an impromptu concert on the steps of Lee Hall.

We performed 5 songs, one of which was a cover of Sarah Siskind’s “Lovin’s for Fools.” I think the night went pretty well overall.

Yet Another Digital Story.

Okay so I know we’ve kind of moved beyond finding examples of digital stories for inspiration, but I wanted to share this one that my roommate found while “Stumbling” the other night.

It’s a project called “We’re All Gonna Die,” don’t worry it’s nothing graphic. It’s a series of photos 1oo meters long, all taken over a period of 20 days in the same place; on a railroad bridge in Berlin. It’s interesting to see all the people in the pictures, what they’re wearing or carrying. My roommate and I have a couple of favorites of the bunch, in particular the man with the crazy hair glaring at the couple kissing.

Update on my Digital Story

Okay so I don’t have the first episode done yet; lots of footage, nothing concrete. Hopefully though I will have an episode to post by next Thursday. I’m hoping to make at least four 5-10 minute videos (possibly longer) over the course of the semester.
We are hoping to do an open mic night soon, so I will post that on here if we figure out when the next open mic night is (maybe someone on here has connections with the Underground and can let me know?). Currently I am working on getting a website set up for the band. I could go with a Myspace, but I am always overly ambitious in these types of things, and started looking for some free website building things out on the internet. The first one I turned up is a site called Weebly. It lets you drag and drop elements, which is nice, but you have to work within what seem to be stolen WordPress themes. It wasn’t really what I was looking for, so I didn’t try to put it up on my subdomain, so I’m not sure how easy or free that would be.

The other site I found is called Wix. I got really excited when I started playing around with this stuff, because it is highly customizable, and uses Flash. It looks very cool and professional. Downside is you either can maintain it for free in a subdirectory of their site, or pay between $5.00-$15.00 a month to have it hosted on your own domain. Pretty cheap if you were in an actual paid band, but too expensive when you are in an unpaid college band. I’m going to see if there’s another way to get at the code from this site, because the page (which you can view here, not much is on it though) loads really slow, at least for me. Another reason I like this site is because it lets you pull in RSS feeds from blogs and twitter accounts, which is helpful.

Hopefully I will find a viable option to build the site and have it up (or just resort to Myspace) with some pictures, and a song or two. (P.S. The songs and the pictures currently on the site I linked to do not belong to Fast Tom).
